Residential Inverter Testing for C-FCAS Capability

2024

As part of the trial of a Virtual Power Plant, we worked with Charles Darwin University (CDU) to test the degree to which residential inverters can provide contingency frequency control ancillary services (C-FCAS) to maintain the frequency within the normal operating range of 50 Hz. The response of the inverters was examined when the grid frequency went beyond the normal operating frequency band an when the frequency deviated more than ± 0.6 Hz from the standard operating frequency of 50 Hz.

Three residential inverters were tested to study their performances and capability to support C‑FCAS: 1) Sungrow hybrid inverter SH5K-30 with 10kWh LG battery, 2) Alpha-ESS Hybrid inverter SMILE5kW with 10 kWh Alpha battery, and 3) Fronius Primo 5.0

The results show that the response to frequency events varied between inverters and that the addition of a control device could improve the inverter response. Read the final report to see the full results.
